About this site

This site is for board and committee members, managers, coordinators,
team leaders and workers in human service organisations.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are advised that this site contain images, voices or names of deceased persons in photographs, video and audio recordings and printed material.

People in human services organisations will provide more appropriate services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people if they understand Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people's history, cultural and social reality.

Here is an A4 flyer you can use to inform staff about the site and the self-study module.

In this web site there are quotes from many historical sources. The terms used vary. When quoting from sources the terms used are those in the source text (even though they may be inappropriate if used today).

What’s the appropriate term? Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, Aborigine, Indigenous, Black, Blackfella, First Australians, First Nations People Terms have different meanings to different people and are wrapped in the history and politics of the time. It's important to be respectful of the preferences of individuals, families, or communities and allow them to define what they are most comfortable with.

There are three steps to improving services:
1
Improving understanding & cultural competence
2
Seeing the implications for service delivery and community development
3
Improving your service delivery and community development through changes to practice
This web site can help you with the first two steps: improving understanding and cultural competence and
seeing the implications. We wish you well for the third step of changing practice.
